After I changed to 3 columns, the Template WYSIWYG editor (surprisngly) was still somewhat functional. The new sidebar elements did appear, but it was almost entirely covered by a grey band. It was not always possible to click on it.

I managed to get around this problem by a simple template fix. i don't know how unique to the template I use ('Harbor') it is, and recall I did this mostly by guessing and trial and error, knowing little of HTML or CSS. But in the hope someone might find this useful, here is a short
